Silica Awareness

Posted on May 11th, 2023 by OSHA Phoenix

When working with materials such as sand, stone, concrete, and mortar, workers need to be aware of crystalline silica. The process of cutting, grinding, drilling, or crushing can cause small particles known as respirable crystalline silica dust to fly up in the air and travel into the worker’s lungs. This can cause silicosis, lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and kidney disease. Workers should wear a N95/K95 masks, or respirators with P95 or P100 filters. Workers should stay away from dust while they eat, drink, and smoke. They should also wash their hands before doing any of these activities to clear their hands of any dust.
