Excavations

Posted on May 15th, 2023 by OSHA Phoenix

Excavations can cause serious hazards to all workers involved. One cubic yard of soil can weigh as much as a car. Excavations must be properly shored or cut back to an acceptable angle of repose to prevent a cave-in. A competent person needs to be involved in planning to have a safe excavation project. Unlike most accidents, the cave-in of an excavation usually can be predicted if closely watched, therefore it is important to have a competent person watch any excavation on a job site. Remember to locate all the underground utilities and identify any overhead hazards before starting to dig.
